That was fast. Amidst many rumors and RDJ-fueled comments about only doing the fourth film with Mel Gibson or Howard Stern, the actor decided to just go ahead and tell us that yes, Iron Man 4 is happening.
“I know there’s going to be a bunch more Marvel movies and they have big ideas of how to do it best, and you know, we’re in the middle of negotiations… okay, yes.”
To be fair, negotiations could always fall through, so we should take this news with a grain of salt. The big question has been whether or not RDJ is willing to extend his contract with Marvel Studios, and doing another Iron Man certainly changes the landscape of the MCU and what we could see happen in Avengers: Age of Ultron.
So apparently RDJ really is just messing with us. On Letterman, the actor reversed his statements:
"There [are] no plans for an Iron Man 4."
Letterman asked him why and he responded:
"That's a valid question. Like it hasn't made enough money? Yeah, I guess they have too much money or something. There is no script for Iron Man 4. They do have a plan and I think they're going to announce it [soon]."
But Letterman persisted and asked again if a fourth sequel could still happen:
"Just between us, no. But, I'm going to do other stuff with Marvel. I'm still going to be involved with Marvel and there's going to be plenty of fun stuff to happen."
Just wow. Well, many of our suspicions have been confirmed, but knowing Downey Jr., we can probably expect to the movie to be re-confirmed and then canceled again at least three more times this week.
